- Tessa Gratton (The Queens of Innis Lear) wrote about her mother’s passing and grief, her mother’s influence on her, mothers in her books, and how her novel Lady Hotspur (coming January 7, 2020) is largely about her own relationship with her mother. (You probably want to have some tissues on hand for this one!)
- Elizabeth Fitzgerald (Earl Grey Editing, The Skiffy and Fanty Show) discussed her love of faerie YA and why she is especially fond of Jodi McAlister’s Valentine series, particularly its inclusion of consent, diverse characters, and healthy relationships.
- SL Huang (Zero Sum Game, Null Set) shared how she used to feel out of place as a woman and how some of the criticism of “strong female characters” in media made her feel uncomfortable with wanting to see women like herself represented.
- Alix E. Harrow (The Ten Thousand Doors of January) wrote about the gift her mother gave her by sharing books in which women told their own stories in “My Mother’s Sword.”
- Sara (The Fantasy Inn) discussed her love for heroines with compassion, inner strength, and quiet courage, and she shared some thoughts on female characters from The Seventh Bride by T. Kingfisher, City of Lies by Sam Hawke, The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb, The Dragon Prince, and Game of Thrones.
On the first day of the month, Renay discussed history and SFF fandom—and revealed the recommendations list of science fiction and fantasy books written by women with 2018’s submissions included. She also invited you to add more books by women writers that you loved this month so they can be added to the list. (If this isn’t your first time adding some favorites to the list, you can also add up to 10 SFF books by women that you discovered in the last year or since the last time you added them—and thank you so much for recommending books for the list!)
